Carnegie Technical School was founded in 1900 by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie as a technical school for working-class Pittsburgh. The school became Carnegie Institute of Technology, or "Tech," in 1912 and merged with the Mellon Institute of Research in 1967 to become Carnegie Mellon University.
