Southwest Florida College was founded in 1974 as the Lehigh School of Business. The name was changed in 1982 to the Fort Myers Business Academy. On June 29, 1995 the school was acquired by the International College Foundation, Inc. of Largo, Florida – a 54 year old private non-profit higher education management company. Junior college accreditation was granted by ACICS on April 25, 1997 and the college received approval for its first branch campus in Tampa in the spring of 2000.
