Winthrop University (formerly Winthrop College) is an American public, four-year liberal arts college in Rock Hill, South Carolina, within the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area. In 2006-07, Winthrop University had an enrollment of 6,292 students. The University is South Carolina's top-rated university according to evaulations conducted by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The University has been rated by the commission as "substantially exceeding standards" every year since that classification was created in 2003. The University was also named by the John Templeton Foundation as a University that "encourages character development".
